Collection: Lung Care
Lungs are a pair of essential organs located in the chest that play a vital role in the process of respiration. They facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, enabling the body to receive the necessary oxygen for cellular function and eliminate waste carbon dioxide.
The lungs are composed of airways and millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. When we inhale, air travels through the windpipe (trachea), which branches into two bronchi, each leading to one lung. The bronchi further divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which eventually end in clusters of alveoli.
During inhalation, oxygen-rich air enters the alveoli and diffuses across their thin walls into tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The oxygen binds to red blood cells, which then transport it throughout the body. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product produced by cells, passes from the capillaries into the alveoli. During exhalation, this carbon dioxide is expelled from the body.
The lungs also contain specialized cells and mechanisms that help filter and clear out harmful substances, protect against infections, and maintain the acid-base balance in the body. Healthy lung function is crucial for overall respiratory health, cardiovascular support, and energy production.
Taking care of your lungs involves avoiding smoking and exposure to pollutants, practicing deep breathing exercises, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking medical advice for any respiratory concerns. Regular check-ups can also help ensure that your lungs are functioning optimally and detect any potential issues early on.
